Robb and Lulu are going green! A green outlook has always been a part of all swimwear brands across Robb and Lulu, and a part of the inspiration for our Garden Glory, and Lover’s Garden collections. But as part of our ongoing goal to be a waste free organisation, we’re plunging into the deep end, and implementing big changes that will result in an eco-friendly swimsuit from top to bottom. We’re doing this by shaking up our existing environmental measures and introducing our Tri-Tiered Approach. This allows us to consider, not only our customers, but also our own potential as a business, and the impact we can have on the wider world.
Tier One – Our Customers
When Robb and Lulu first began creating luxury swimsuits, and training swimwear, reducing waste was already a huge part of the business. Nylon is the top fabric used in swimsuits, but nylon is also totally non-biodegradable, and when disposed of, can exist in landfill, or our oceans forever.
That’s why we’re using better fabric
than other swimwear brands. All of our men’s, kids’
, and women’s swimwear
is made from a mix of polyester, and Econyl; a totally recycled nylon product that is regenerated from nylon waste. It has the same level of quality as brand new nylon, and it can be disposed of, and reused again. This incredible circular process has the potential to create a complete absence of nylon waste, without a loss in quality. For every 10,000 tons of Econyl raw materials, 70,000 barrels of crude oil are saved, and 57,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions are avoided. It’s staggering just how big of an impact one change can have. This change isn’t just great for the environment, it also means we have created game changing swimwear. Experience the benefits for yourself, and shop our cutting edge, designer swimwear here
But, our environment, and our customers, deserve so much more than just one change. That’s why we’re implementing eco-friendly packaging that will stay with our swimsuits all the way from their ethical manufacturer in India, to our customers all over the world. From women’s one piece swimsuits
, to bikinis, and kids’ swimsuits
; all of our swimwear will now be packaged in cellophane, and stored in cardboard satchels, with paper linings to provide extra protection for their journey from us to our customers. All of these paper products are eco-friendly
and made from recycled materials.
Cellophane may seem like an odd choice, but the plastic like product is actually an undiscovered environmental champion. Unlike biodegradable plastic packaging, which can still take significant time to break down, our cellophane degrades within 10 to 30 days. The product is made from wood pulp, and after our customers have received their designer swimwear, they can scrunch the cellophane into a ball and put it in the compost, or the bin, where it will quickly break down.
We are so proud to be one of the few companies to have embraced Econyl, and eco-friendly packaging, and hope that many more follow our lead.
Tier Two – Our Office
So far all of our changes have predominately been aimed at our customers, to ensure they are receiving the most sustainable, and environmentally conscious swimwear we can offer. That being said, we do practice what we preach and have also gone green in our offices. All paper products
, and our pens, will be made from recycled paper, and even our sticky tape will be made from a cellophane base, ensuring it’s degradable.
On top of this we aim to include our staff in all of our environmental actions. This includes education about new measures we’re bringing in, and what we can do to be better. We believe that the grass is greener on the other side, so we’re bringing our team along on our journey toward sustainability. This way we can instil a passion within our wonderful team that they will carry on in their day to day lives, and future endeavours.
All of these measures ensure that our offices and customers are participating in part of an eco-friendly revolution, where quality, style, and sustainability can all exist in equal measure, with no single element being sacrificed for the unnecessary benefit of another.
Tier Three – Our Oceans
While our big focus has been going green, we haven’t forgotten that, as a swimwear brand, we also need to ‘go blue’. This means taking care of the beaches and oceans that our swimwear helps our customers enjoy. To do this we’re going to be diving into new territory, by starting work with a charity of our choice, that cares for our oceans. We want our customers to know that when they buy swimwear from us, they are having a meaningful impact. If you’d like to start making a difference, you can shop our swimwear here
Tier Three goes hand in hand with our waste-free philosophy and enables us to put our money where our mouth is. Not only can Robb and Lulu not thrive if our beaches and oceans are polluted and unendurable, but we wouldn’t want to. We are proud to be paving the way for sustainable fashion and swimwear, and hope that with our new Tri-Tiered Approach, we can encourage others to follow suit.
